‘Verbosity’ typical of letter writer

Re: Letter writer simply shows off wordiness, March 22.

To the Editor,

Re: Letter writer simply shows off wordiness, March 22.

I have long wished to write such a letter, partly becuse I have been a life-long admirer of the English language.

Lord Acton, long ago, described the output of such missives as David Dunaway’s as “mere jargon”.

One is forcibly reminded, each time one of Dunaway’s letter appears, of Disrael’s description of Gladstone: “A quasi-rhetorician, inebriated by the exuberance of his own verbosity.”

Now that’s elegant English.
