Re: “Now is the time to capture and retain water”, (Citizen, Dec. 2)
I have watched the wasting of water in the Valley for many years.
I say ‘wasting’ because it seems very few try to collect and store it for use in drought conditions.
Born and raised on the prairie, I saw different methods of conserving water.
Many people collected rain water in buckets or barrels placed at the eaves of houses. Houseplants flourish when watered by rain water. Our hair was shiny from rinsing it in rain water, not from chemical products.
Commonly, people had cisterns and/or dugouts to store water when it rained.
I wonder if that idea could be used here.
As John Empey wrote, the population continues to increase, many new homes are being built, further taxing our natural resources.
My suggestion is to require water storage facilities, such as a cistern, be built in every new house or on the property. It would be a start.
Time to think differently has come. Time to do something is now.
