You’ll be hard pressed to find anyone that disagrees with Hazel Beech being named freeman of the Town of Lake Cowichan. She’s been helping Cowichan Lake area citizens for as long as most people can remember.
What Beech reminds us of is how much of a difference one person can make in the community they live in. Look at her efforts as part of the Advisory Planning Commission, as an example. Along with other volunteers, she’s building the framework for the town’s future elected officials to build off of.
With a sense of community becoming partially lost, such as in Youbou, where the social society has recently died due to a lack of volunteers, it becomes clear that we need more Hazel Beeches in our area. It only takes a small group of people to create fun community endeavours, as Heritage Days, Bay Days, Lake Days, the Youbou Regatta, and various other events all prove.
Still no camping allowed at Centennial Park
Although it’s quite unusual for a newspaper to print a retraction of a story from a competing publication, because the Gazette has already been contacted a few times it should be noted that the town’s elected officials have not decided to allow camping at Centennial Park for special events. The Gazette reports on all Town of Lake Cowichan regular and committee meetings, and would have alerted readers as soon as possible had anything changed with regard to council’s stance on camping.
