Re: City still seeks new welcome signs in The Morning Star.

The up to $200,000 the City Fathers are considering spending on replacing the Welcome to Vernon signs might be put to better use making the northern and southern entrances to the city of Vernon more attractive.

If the purpose is to make visitors welcome and that they’ll like what they see, a clean-up project, particularly between the Okanagan College and town, would do the trick.

What tourists see is the ever-scraggly weeds along the roadside tangled up with endless amounts of litter.

Surely some better effort can be made to make the city look like its citizens actually and actively care about how it looks.

And I wonder at the planners who gave permission for the gravel pit across the highway from the welcome sign near the Kekuli Bay turnoff.

Where tourists could once behold the sunflowers carpeting the hillside in the spring, they now are faced with great gaping scars.

The juxtaposition with the welcome sign speaks volumes.
