What is Rossland reading?

A WWII novel about the Warsaw Zoo and a sci-fi YA novel where the survival of humanity is uncertain.

The Zookeeper’s Wife by Diane Ackerman, 2008

Available through BC Interlibrary Connect as hard copy, e-book and DVD

This is the true and unique story of the Warsaw Zoo during World War II, a place of refuge for many fleeing from the Nazis. The humanity and brutality of humans are both shown in recounting the tragic history of Poland and Warsaw’s Jewish population. But the tragedy is gently told, and woven throughout is the magic of the heroine’s special gift with animals.

The 5th Wave by Rick Yancey, 2013

Available in hard copy at RPL, also as e-book and DVD through BC Interlibrary Connect

The survival of humanity is uncertain — the mothership circling earth unleashes the first wave, a massive electromagnetic pulse, the second, a tsunami destroying all coastal cities. The next waves are equally horrific, along with the aliens amongst us angle. It’s up to the plucky kids to save the world, as this is a YA novel, which I very much enjoyed as an adult reader.
