Plan to plant fruit trees just inviting bear problem, says letter-writer

Re: Bear and Cougar sighting on increase (News, June 7) and 500 fruit trees to be planted in the CRD region (Community, June 7)

Article 1 – Conservation officer Scott Norris says bear and cougar sighting on increase.

Article 2 – 500 fruit trees to be planted in the CRD region – a story about the Capital Region Food and Agriculture Roundtable.

I wonder if the roundtable consulted with Mr. Norris about planting bear feeders throughout the region? Deer like fruit trees. They like to nibble young ones into stubs.

If these trees survive and produce fruit, the plan is to have people seek them out in bear territory and pilfer the “bear feeder.”

Question: Don’t you think the bears might whack you, just like you whack them when they pilfer your food? Who thinks this stuff up?
