Why buy timber?

Where does it say municipalities can buy timber rights?

After reading the article regarding the town’s initiative to purchase logging rights from Timberlands, (The News, March 4) I began searching through the services our municipality provides us.  I could find nothing to suggest that our money, could be spent buying timber.

It would seem that monies of that amount might be better spent on services deemed to be within the parameters of the town’s laws, and not responding to what might be a squeeze play by the lumber company.  I read nowhere in the article where Timberlands said they were going to cut, only that there was a deadline to provide dollars to cover what income they could harvest from these trees.

Any time I read about issues involving trees and/or water I see the photos and names of the same politicians and green advocates traipsing through some patch of forest followed by their few loyal supporters. Perhaps these bedfellows should address their advocacy toward issues that are more important to a larger constituency.
