To the Editor,
The NIMBY environmental types are at it again. They try to dissuade people from supporting the Compliance Coal, Raven Mine project by using alchemy as their source of proof.
There are people who believe that there is strong opposition to this mine and the shipping of coal to Port Alberni but in reality it is the same basic few writing multiple letters and trying to insinuate support.
John Snyder (from CoalWatch Comox Valley) has a Facebook site that was supposed to be open to the general public but anyone who ‘joined’ this group and questioned their science or their ethics was immediately “banned” from the group.
The No Coal people make some pretty outlandish claims and wring their hands and gnash their teeth about supposed concerns over the water quality of Baynes Sound and surrounding area and the devastation it will cause.
There is no stopping the people opposed to the mine and they write over and over to government agencies and expect personnel will not notice these multiple documents from the same few people.
The possibility of the coal mine and its close proximity to the railroad could provide a real shot in the arm for the E & N railroad. It could return the railroad to profitability if the mine was given approval to develop with the proviso that the entire product produced be shipped by rail to Port Alberni for furtherance.
I am retired, never worked in the coal industry, but did work in the coking process of a steel mill back east and also worked as a contractor, a foreman in a small sawmill, owned a couple of supply businesses and most recently did a couple year’s stint in the local Canadian Tire.
