You paid for their dinner at the Doghouse, Dec. 21

My mother asked me to say thank you to the person who anonymously paid for my parents’ dinner at the Doghouse Restaurant on Friday, Dec. 21.

My father is a 93-year-old WWll vet and my mother just turned 91 on Dec. 1. They have six children, 15 grandchildren, 16 great-grandchildren and 2.5 great-great-grandchildren (one due in May.) My father was a respected legion member/volunteer for several decades until age overtook him, and he marched every Remembrance Day up and down that hill in Ladysmith well into his 80s. My mother canvassed door-to-door into her 80s, fundraising for cancer research, an illness that she herself has survived.

Nowadays they must live separately but Mom drives herself over every day to where Dad lives and, despite his old bones and failing memory, he can still lead her in a waltz around his room. It’s not often that we receive such kindness from strangers. You should know that your gift created exactly the effect you might have hoped for.

So here it is: on behalf of Barney & Marion Baines, thank you.
