The 100 Mile House Minor Hockey Association hosted a peewee hockey tournament on Jan. 5 and 6, with the Prince George Ice Breakers turning out as the victors.

“The tournament was great. We had four out of town teams come in,” said Teresa Porter, tournament coordinator. “Everybody, I think, was really excited for the tournament is that it was right before school went back in.”

Last year, the tournament had seven teams come to town but according to Porter, this year’s tournament only saw five teams on the ice due to last minute cancellations. She did say though that it still ended up being a good tournament and there were no major injuries to any of the roughly 85 players who came to play.

The 100 Mile House Peewee team did not fare as well as Prince George, coming in fourth place.

“We didn’t show up and play at our finest,” she said, adding that they had some problems having a full team play. “When it came down to deciding where we landed, we were a couple points shy of being in second or third place. Our goals for and against wasn’t what we liked but we played well. We played as a team. We just didn’t have the numbers to pull off a higher finish.”

Porter said a highlight for her was receiving feedback from the coaches, particularly those from Prince George and Valemount, who lost to the former team 4-3 in the final. She said it was very positive.

“They both sent emails back stating how well run the tournament was and how players on and off the ice were gracious and how they praised their teams afterwards on how well they played,” she said. “That’s kind of a testament to coaching and parents.”

Porter went on to say how important and thankful she and the organization are for the support from the community and how much the donations for raffle and door prizes have helped support the Peewee tournament (and others) in 100 Mile House.
