April

Terrace youth hockey player Myah Bowal won provincials in the female Major Midget Hockey League for the second year in a row with the Northern Capitals team from Prince George. Bowal had several scholarship offers from universities after she turned heads as a lead goal-scorer on the team at the prestigious Mac tournament in Calgary at the very beginning of 2016.

A men’s team of curlers from Terrace and Kitimat earned second place at the 89th annual Kelly Cup in Prince George on March 31 to April 3, competing with 34 teams from across the province. The team plans to try for gold next year.

A local men’s recreation hockey team called Ruins Boardshop won first place in an international tournament in Las Vegas on April 7-10. They played in the 30+ division of the “Gamblers Cup,” put on by Canadian Hockey Enterprises, ending their season with their first international victory.

Terrace junior badminton player Lisa Nicholson and Prince George player Kiana Gallagher won undefeated in junior girls doubles at the North Central Badminton Tournament in Prince George on April 29-May 2. Nicholson, 14, also won second in the U17 division, playing a level above her age, against 24 northern competitors.

The Terrace Minor Softball Association recruited a top-notch coach and instructor named Kim Shelley, who was the mother of a player but had taught professional softball in B.C.’s Lower Mainland for many years.

Valen Collins from Terrace won the Can Skater of the Year award for B.C. and Yukon, given by Skate Canada for his effort, good attitude and progress in skating, having advanced from stage one to five in just two years. With a great attitude and work ethic, Collins and his family were flown to Vancouver for an awards banquet.

Sue Simpson and Birgitte Bartlett, and Bartlett’s daughters Nina Peden and Mary Denton, and grand daughter Araya Bartlett, ran the Copenhagen marathon together May 22. Inspired partly by their historical and cultural connection to Copenhagen, the three generations of family ran on the year which marks the 50th anniversary of when their family immigrated to Canada.

Both the U16 and U15 club girls volleyball teams from Terrace won gold in provincials in Abbotsford in early May. U16 Terrace Rage won all three round robin games, and climbed all the way to the top with victories against several strong Lower Mainland teams. U15 Terrace Rage also conquered several strong Lower Mainland teams to claim gold.

Three Terrace Bluebacks won medals at the northwest regional swim meet in Kitimat on May 13-15. Juliet Lukasser won silver and Emma Kuirinlahti and Avery Back both earned bronze.

A team of dragon boaters launched a new competitive team called the Northwest Wave Riders, with eight Terrace paddlers and others from Kitimat, Prince Rupert, and Smithers. The aim was to paddle together in the Nanaimo Dragon Boat Festival July 8-10.

The North Coast Nightmares won 204-110 against the Gold Pain City Derby Girls from Quesnel on May 7 at the Terrace Sportsplex.

Tristen Morgan won a gold medal in the Star 4 competition for ages 13 and older at a Victoria Day competition in Surrey.

The Terrace Northmen kicked off their new season with a tournament trophy and an opening game win after recruiting George Dacosta as their first official coach. The team said the coach gave new direction and strategy.

Carly Davies earned a full ride volleyball scholarship to play with Mount Royal Cougars women’s volleyball team in Calgary. She was also named one of the top 15 female Grade 12 volleyball players in B.C., by The Province.

A team of 25 taekwondo athletes competed in the BC Cup in Prince George and returned home with a lot of medals.
