Terrace angler John Lukasser landed a 38.1-pound spring salmon on July 10 to win second place in the Kitsumkalum Tempo Fishing Derby. He landed it from the shore of the Skeena River with spin and glow hook and eggs, and said it didn’t put up much of a fight. The derby finished later that day, and the first place winner was Peter Mullin with a salmon of 41.1 pounds. Lukasser took second and third place went to Joe Branco with a 37.1-pounder.

Brandon Mclean, 16, broke league records in deadlift and bench press for youth under 17, and won gold at a Canadian Powerlifting League (CPL) competition in Vancouver July 9-10.

Hockey players Kyle Lindstrom and Austin Turner from Terrace won the Junior B title for western Canada with the 100 Mile House Wranglers this spring. The Wranglers won the KIJHL (Kootenay International Junior Hockey League) in March, and then earned the provincial Cyclone Taylor Cup in Victoria in April. They scored the Keystone Cup in Regina next competing with the 12 top league teams from all the western provinces to northwestern Ontario.

The Northwest Wave Riders women’s dragon boat team launched its boat with enthusiastic shouts at its first competition in Nanaimo, placing 14th out of 40 competitive women’s teams.

Two Terrace youths, Levi Ewald and Jacey Neid, got a taste of higher calibre volleyball during the summer playing on Team BC in the under-16 division.

J.P. Bourgoin, 81, competed in the horseshoe nationals in Victoria on August 17-20, where he finished fifth in the ‘A’ elders class with 52.3 per cent ringers. Bruce Miller also competed and got third in the lower level ‘G’ class.

Speedway racer Jesse Goddard was thrilled to win silver in the main race of the B Hornets Class (aka bombers) in the Gordie Mannes Memorial races in Penticton July 30-31. His best time was 17.629 seconds.

Soccer Player Cam Hundal tried out for pro ball in Germany during the summer, but was blocked by language and situational barriers. Now he is aiming for a spot in the North American pro soccer leagues next year.

Terrace Northmen rugby team had a phenomenal year, running an undefeated season against Williams Lake and Prince George and then seizing the provincial Saratoga Cup against division three teams in Penticton Sept. 17-18. They also won a big tournament in Montana at the start of their season.

A sturdy new bridge now opens up safer access to the alpine range in the Seven Sisters Provincial Park between Terrace and Hazelton, built by volunteers from the Skeena-Stikine chapter of the Back Country Horsemen of BC and a few BC rangers.

The speedway doubled its popularity in Terrace this summer, with a spiffed up track, a boost of new racers and a new class of Legend cars.

Terrace Skater Heather Hanna returned to coach at the club here after an exhilarating six years gliding on the professional rinks of cruise ships and performing in extensive international tours with Disney on Ice and Holiday on Ice (similar to Ice Capades).
