There will be some great ball field action next weekend with preliminary games all week building up to the Williams Lake Slo-Pitch year-end tournament at the beautiful ball park at the Esler fields.

A lot of work has gone into the ball fields and the common areas, according to league president Linda Barbondy.

“We put new dugouts up last fall, were up there painting early this March and picked up rocks and sticks, raked and planted grass,” she said. “We put up two sets of aluminum bleachers and have two more on the way.”

There will be 25 teams in the tournament.

The Slo-Pitch league has a huge impact on Williams Lake from April through August, according to Barbondy, who said that there are approximately 700 adults involved, not to mention the teams and crowds that come for games and tournament weekends.

“There will be round robin games this week, with the second rounds on Saturday and the playoffs starting with a double knock out. The final game will take place 3 p.m. Sunday,” she continued.

Barbondy, who has been playing ball all her life, has been on the league executive for 21 years, has been league president for 15 years and her team, the Rowdies, has been in the league for 22 years.

She said the season will end with an award banquet in October.

“We might hold another tournament in September to end up the season,” she added. “The fields are perfect then.”
