September 30 will see the 25th year of a very unique Cariboo event.
The Quesnel Women’s Fall Challenge started in 1993 as a walk with friends. The initial walk grew to include friends of friends, and raising a bit of money. The 23rd edition was a banner year because the goal of acquiring a digital mammography machine was finally realized through the event’s fundraising.
Last year, it contributed to upgrading the maternity rooms with the addition of neonatal resuscitators. And this, the 25th running of the event, will target the furnishing and modernization of the QWFC birthing room at G.R. Baker Memorial Hospital.
Do you realize how amazing all of this has been? Incredible sponsors donate cash, baskets, certificates, water, loads of gravel, bags of swag, the use of a vehicle, busses from the city, dog grooming, swanky sunglasses, unique bags, a barbecue, apples, paint, car wash gear, wood carvings, vegetables and fruit, dinners out, plants, golfing, muffins, cookies, oaken oils, and more!
Please join us and be part of the 25th celebration. We will have live music courtesy of the Occyjuicebox Band. Show your appreciation on our cool autumn Sunday morning – clap, tap and move. We are so fortunate to have local talent share in our delight. Warm your fingers with a taste of the McCafe offerings. There are only two McCafe trailers in the country, and one of them will be at the Dragon Lake Boat Launch on Sunday, Sept. 30 for this local event.
Whether this is your 20th walk or your first time, join us. Bring a friend, a mother, a daughter – how many generations will participate? Local families like the Backers and the Richardsons have already registered their three generations, and we hope the Muirs and Nelsons will be there too. How many more, and what about you?
Registration forms can be found at the Quesnel and District Recreation Centre or at Reason to Run on Reid Street. You can sign up online for the 5km walk or run, 10km walk or run, half marathon or wheelchair category at Strideandglide.ca/event-clinic-registrations. Shirts are a performance soft polyester of sapphire or periwinkle blue, and these are available at the Rec Centre.
