5k or 10k Run/Walk takes off from Carrot Park in Hardy

After the run, there was a free dinner at Port Hardy Secondary School and prizes were awarded.

While rain came down from a heavy overcast sky, that didn’t stop athletes of all ages from meeting up at Carrot Park in Port Hardy to run in the 5k or 10k run/walk event last Wednesday.

The annual event is part of SportMedBC’s Aboriginal Run/Walk program, which is dedicated to improving health and fitness of Aboriginal people in communities in British Columbia via a 13-week training program.

Organizer Stephanie Nelson, who works for North Island Building Blocks in Port Hardy, was thrilled with the turnout for the run, despite the bad weather.

The event had a total of 66 participants, and a handful of people completed the 10k route while everyone else did the 5k route.

After the run, there was a free dinner at Port Hardy Secondary School and prizes were awarded.
