The Huber Farm and Equestrian Centre and the Cariboo Trails Carriage Driving Society finished off their year with a backfield driving trials event on Sept. 22 and 23.
“Other than being cold and wet on Saturday, everybody had a really good time. We had a really good turnout for the type of event it was,” said Ken Huber, one of the organizers.
About 14 people came with their hitches, drawn by donkeys, mules or horses, competed in the event, much to Huber’s surprise.
“I was expecting less because it is September and it’s colder. We usually average around eight or nine hitches, so this was very good,” he said.

In addition to the entrees, there were 40 people in all including the groomers and family of the competitors.
Some of the competitors came as far as Sherwood Park, Alta. to learn how to drive horse-led carriages.
“It means we’re doing a good job, we’re doing something right because they like to come back and they enjoy it,” said Huber on drawing people from outside the area to the farm in 70 Mile House.
This was the last event at the Huber Farm and Equestrian Centre until May 2019.
The training level winner for Sept. 22 was Kathy Helmig and the preliminary level winner was Heather Dolemo. On Sunday, the training level winner was Michelle Davis Ralston and the preliminary level winner was Ellen Hockley.
