Local teams performed very well against stiff competition last weekend in Parksville

More than 80 curlers took to the ice for the Ladies Open Bonspiel at the Parksville Curling Club this past weekend for a three-day tournament, featuring teams from across Vancouver Island and one team from South Korea.

Currently touring the province of British Columbia, the Junior National Team from Gyeongbuk, South Korea, took to the ice at the Parksville Curling Club for some action over the weekend.

There were five events, with more than 50 games played between the 20 teams taking part.

The “A” event final came down to an exciting finish, as the Robson rink was tied with the Soouth Korean Ryu rink after eight ends.

A tie-breaking extra end resulted in the Robson rink from the Comox Valley (skipped by Qualicum Beach’s Lynne Noble) holding on for the win.

Winners of the five events:

“A” event (sponsored by Rob Willis): skip Lynne Noble (Qualicum Beach), third Colleen Robson, second Kathy Branch and lead Lindsay Sparkes (Comox Valley). Runner up was the Ryu rink from Gyeongbuk, South Korea.

“B” event (sponsored by Lesley’s Esthetics): skip Lorraine Jefferies, third Zorka Smith, second Shirley McMillan and lead Trudy Beskau (Port Alberni/Nanaimo). Runner up was the Barnowsky rink from the Comox Valley.

“C” event (sponsored by Sunwest Helicopters): skip Monique Holtzman, third Tomoe Bannon/Akiko Abe, second Penny Haslett and lead Monica Tironese (Parksville). Runner up was the Dale rink from Parksville/Qualicum Beach.

“D” event (sponsored by Sheila Dale): skip Barb Birt, third Peggy Aikman, second Maxine Morris and lead Diane Sneddon (from Qualicum Beach). Runner up was the McLennan rink from Parksville.

“E” event (sponsored by Shoppers Drug Mart): skip Cheryl Noble, third Nancy Douglas, second Tina Chestnut and lead June Cousineau (Parksville). Runner up was the Machan rink from Parksville.
