A wee bit o’ Irish on the ice

Curlers celebrated St. Patrick’s Day with a weekend-long bonspiel last week, despite an obvious lack of the traditional green on the sheets.

The bonspiel also marked the end of the curling season.

The Tollefson rink, consisting of skip, Darcy Tollefson, third Tim Richards, second Gord Reid and lead Nick Sarabyn took triumphed over the Coffey rink to take top honours in the ‘A’ event.

Tied after five ends in the final game, the Tollefson Rink scored five in the sixth for a 6-1 win.

The Pethick Rink stumbled against the Wawryk Rink in the ‘B’ event final.

The Wawryk rink was up two playing the seventh. Skip Grant Wawryk capitalized on Bob Pethick’s draw coming up short, scoring two more for the Wawryk rink to lead it to a 8-4 win.

The Brady Waffle Rink and the Blair Hedden Rink fought hard for the win in the ‘C’ event, in a close game that went to extra ends.

In the end it was Blair hitting shot rock for the 8-7 win.

The Jerome Deis Rink came up against the Brent Hodgson rink in the ‘D’ final.

Hodgson stole five in the second for a 7-1 lead, holding on for an 8-4 win.

The bonspiel drew 18 teams, with a couple out-of-towners from Williams Lake and Ft. St. James.

Dave Plant, the rink manager, was happy with the season, with similar numbers participating to last year.

He is, however planning on a membership drive in the fall, along with some tweaking to encourage more people to come out, including tweaking scheduling to get rid of conflicts.
