Abandoned campfires a cause for concern

Campers need to ensure campfire ashes are cool to the touch before leaving

Over the past two weeks several abandoned campfires have been discovered within the Cariboo Fire Centre’s jurisdiction.

Cariboo Fire Centre (CFC) fire information officer Natasha Broznitsky says campfires are being abandoned, and they have been on the rise recently in the CFC, she notes.

“There have been two abandoned campfires just this week and last week an abandoned campfire sparked a wildfire in the Quesnel Lakes area. Our crews were successful in containing that fire at a small size and the fire has since been put out but it’s disappointing that we’re seeing abandoned campfires”.

The BC Wildfire Service wants the public to adhere to all open burning regulations and be more diligent with their campfire use.
