Several Abbotsford athletes took home gold at the Western Canada Summer Games.
Cohen Kiers and Dawson Friesen, both 16, competed in the artistic gymnastics event with Team BC and finished collectively with three podium finishes in the opening round of competition last Sunday in in Wood Buffalo, Alta.
In the men’s all-around competition, Kiers topped the class of 25, taking gold, while Friesen scooped up silver.
In the individuals events on Tuesday, Kiers also snapped up the gold in the parallel bars and high bar competitions, as well as third-place finishes in the floor exercise and pommel horse.Friesen, in the individual men’s contests, secured gold in the vault and floor exercise events.
Team BC also won gold in the team competition.
Both Kiers and Friesen compete out of the Abbotsford-based Twisters Gymnastics Club under the tutelage of former Olympians Richard Ikeda and his brother, Ken.
In the female judo event, Abbotsford native Isabelle Harris secured gold in the 57-63 kilogram division, beating her Team Saskatchewan opponent 7-0.
In addition, Simren Brar of Abbotsford took gold in dominant fashion, defeating Alberta’s Joel DeMaere 10-0 in the final judo bout of the 50-55kg male division.
Abbotsford’s Mitchell Wolfe also medalled in judo, picking up bronze in the 60-66 kg male division.
The men’s and women’s B.C. judo teams also managed to take gold in the team competitions.
