Abbotsford schools cleaned up at the Fraser Valley Track and Field Championships in Coquitlam from May 16 to 19.
Abbotsford Christian Secondary and W.J. Mouat Secondary respectively won the junior and senior combined team scores competition.
ACS dominated with a total of 142.5 points, beating out second place Maple Ridge Secondary by 44.5 points. The Knights dominated in field events, and also had strong results in distance races. Mouat also placed ninth in the junior team scores competition, with MEI placing 11th.
Mouat excelled for combined senior scores, with a total of 140 points. They beat out Maple Ridge by 25 points, and had excellent showings in field events, relays and distance events. ACS placed fifth in the senior team scores, with MEI finishing 18th overall and Yale Secondary coming in 21st.
ACS athlete Aaron Postma, fresh off committing to the Trinity Western University Spartans in March, proved why he was so coveted by the school. Postma placed first in the senior triple jump and the senior long jump at the event. He crushed the competition in the triple jump, outpacing the second place jumper by over 1.5 metres.
Mouat’s Vikramjit Gondara also had a pair of first place finishes, excelling in both the senior discus throw and the senior hammer throw. He edged out his Hawks teammate Jayden Driver, who placed second in both events.
Jamie Wiens from ACS grabbed a first place in the senior girls high jump, winning the competition by .05 of a metre. Robert Bateman Secondary‘s lone first place finish was by Greg Poirier, who won the senior boys shot put. Mouat’s Linus Pieper took home first place in the senior boys 110 m hurdles, beating out second place by nearly half a second.
St. John Brebeuf‘s Cayla Snow picked up the school’s only first place showing, placing first in the junior girls 300 m hurdles. Abbotsford Senior’s lone first place showing was won by Sydney Fetterly, who edged out Mouat’s Rachel Mortimer in the junior girls 3000 m. Brendan Visser from ACS also earned first place in the junior boys 1500 m race walk. He beat out his Knights teammates Cameron Vanderveen and Reagan Van Belle to win. Mouat’s Nic Bonneau won the senior boys 1500 m race walk, and in the junior girls 1500 m race walk it was MEI’s Summer Joiner on top.
Mouat dominated in the boys 4 X 100 m, with both the junior and senior teams winning first place. The MEI junior girls 4 X 400 m also finished first.
Grade 8 first place winners from Abbotsford included: Dan Ko from MEI (boys triple jump), Blake Flikkema (boys shot put) and Cailin Bitter (girls discus).
Second place senior finishers were: Abby Senior’s Abresia Foote (1500 m girls race walk), Yale’s Zach Foth (boys javelin), Mouat’s Devon Kular (boys pole vault) and Matthew Welsh (400 m boys hurdles).
The Mouat senior boys 4 X 400 m team also finished second.
Second place junior winners included: Mouat’s Rachel Mortimer (1500 m girls run and 800 m girls run), MEI’s Lyzandria Enns (girls triple jump), ACS athlete Kene Ubajaka (boys discus), Cole Brandsma from ACS (boys javelin), Cameron Vanderveen from ACS (boys pole vault) and Cassie Brandsma from ACS (girls high jump).
Cailin Bitter from MEI also finished second in the Grade 8 girls shot put.
Third place senior finishers were: Mouat’s Cole Barker (200 m boys run), Mouat’s Joel Klammer (boys javelin), Mouat’s Amrin Bhangu (boys pole vault), Janessa Minderhaud from ACS (girls pole vault) and Mouat’s Jayden Driver (boys shot put).
Yale’s senior boys 4 X 400 m relay team also finished third.
Junior third place finishers included: Jessica Kampman from ACS (1500 m girls steeplechase), Abby’s Sydney Fetterly (1500 m girls run), St. John Brebeuf’s Cayla Snow (80 m girls hurdles), Jonathan Van Garderen from ACS (200 m boys run), MEI’s Kyla Smith (girls javelin throw), Kene Ubajaka from ACS (boys shot put), James Kehler from ACS (triple jump), Eryn De Jonge from ACS (girls pole vault) and Lindsay McGrail from ACS (girls hammer throw).
MEI’s junior girls 4 X 100 m team also finished third.
Grade 8 third place finishers were: MEI’s Dan Ko (boys long jump) and Jaelyn Dragt from ACS (girls triple jump).
Qualifying athletes advance to the provincials, which occur in Nanaimo from June 2 to 4.
