The Abbotsford Junior Cardinals’ title quest came up short at the British Columbia Junior Premier Baseball League championships in Surrey on Sunday.
Abbotsford fell 7-3 to the Okanagan Junior Athletics in the semi-final, dashing their title hopes.
The Cards fell behind 5-0 after three innings, and rallied late for three runs in the bottom of the seventh but it wasn’t enough.
Dallas Teichrob had a solid day at the plate, with a team-high two hits and scoring a run. Robert Bradley was the lone Cardinal to earn a run batted in.
Teichrob was yanked from the mound after two innings, after allowing five runs. He was credited with the semi-final loss.
The Cardinals had no answer for Athletics pitcher Ethan Soroka, who allowed just three hits in six shutout innings.
The Athletics then advanced to the BCJBL final against the North Shore Twins later that day. North Shore captured the championship with a 15-0 win over Okanagan.
Abbotsford posted two wins on Friday during round-robin action at the tournament, beating the host Whalley Chiefs 9-8 and the Athletics 7-6. The Cardinals then fell 15-2 to the Twins on Saturday.
The failed title bid ends the dreams of the junior team joining the senior team as champions. The senior team won its first ever BCPBL title at DeLair Park on July 31.
