An Abbotsford baseball product is now officially property of the Toronto Blue Jays.
Yale Secondary student and Abbotsford Cardinals player Carter Loewen was selected by the Major League Baseball club in the 40th round of the MLB draft on Saturday.
The 6′ 4″, 205-pound Loewen has played both pitcher and infielder with the Cardinals, but the Blue Jays drafted him as a pitcher and are hoping to develop him on the mound in the coming years.
Loewen, picked 1,212th overall, impressed in his one appearance on the mound for the Cardinals this season. He struck out eight, and allowed just one run on three hits in five innings to pick up a win. He has also been strong offensively for the Cardinals, hitting .444, with two home runs and 13 runs batted in this season.
The Grade 12 student committed to the University of Hawaii‘s baseball program last November, and has also been a member of Team BC and Team Canada teams during his junior baseball career.
Also selected at the draft was Yale student Jake Polancic.
The Langley Blaze pitcher was chosen by the Arizona Diamondbacks in the 11th round, 329th overall.
Polancic has a record of 3-1 with a 1.50 earned run average and 37 strikeouts in 32.2 innings pitched this season in BCPBL action.
