Abbotsford’s Sophie Schmidt was the difference in Canada’s 1-0 win over France in the Olympics quarterfinals on Friday.
Schmidt converted a volley from the back post after a set up from Janine Beckie to clinch the win for Canada in the 56th minute.
The win advances Canada to the semi-finals, and is the Canadians fourth straight win at the Olympics. France headed into the tournament ranked third in the world, while Canada was ranked tenth.
“We showed that Canadian grit again,” said John Herdman, Canada Soccer’s Women’s National Team Head Coach. “That’s what takes teams through tournaments. Our whole team defensively was very disciplined and then we had our moment of quality as Sophie Schmidt’s goal was outstanding. “It was just another real team performance. I am just proud of what we are showing as we are off to the medal rounds, but we are not done yet.” Canada will now take on Germany in the semi-finals on Aug. 16 at noon. The Canucks defeated the Germans 2-1 in Olympics preliminary action on Aug. 9. The other semi-final match features Sweden agains the winner of Brazil and Australia, who play tonight (Friday) at 10 p.m.
