Achurch, Cowichan 49ers shut down Gorge

Both teams were scoreless on Saturday until the 65th minute

On the day Darian Achurch received his award for being the top goalie in Div. 1 of the Vancouver Island Soccer League last season, he collected his first shutout in masters play this season.

Achurch was presented with the award for his play with Cowichan LMG just prior to the Cowichan 49ers’ home match on Saturday afternoon. He then led his new club to a 2-0 victory over Gorge FC.

Both teams were scoreless on Saturday until the 65th minute, when Henry Nelson was dragged down and awarded a penalty kick, which he slotted home. Neall (Rocket) Rowlings blew a breakaway, but atoned for it with a goal of his own in the 75th minute.

Defender Tyler Hughes was named Man of the Match for his hard work and organization.

The 49ers will be back on the Sherman Road turf this Saturday for an all-Cowichan match against the Steelheads at 6 p.m.

Fans are asked to stay away from the park so the teams can avoid breaking COVID-19 protocols.
