Typically, it is parents cheering their children on in their respective sports, but the tables will be turned this weekend.
That’s because Tourism Langley is presenting Langley Canada Day Sport Fest on June 28 and June 29. The event precedes the Langley Canada Day celebrations on June 30 and July 1.
The two-day sports festival will feature master’s lacrosse, bocce and a co-ed seven-on-seven soccer tournament and will be held at the Langley Events Centre and Willoughby Community Park.
The lacrosse will be indoors in the LEC fieldhouse and the arena bowl, the soccer will be on the artificial turf fields at the Park and the bocce will be contested on the newly-opened bocce courts.
The courts are located just west of the sand volleyball courts.
A few hundred participants, as well as their families, are expected to attend.
“There are so many sport tourism events held in Langley each year geared to children and youth,” said Deborah Kulchiski, the executive director of Tourism Langley.
“We really wanted to focus on the recreational adult athletes,” said Tourism Langley’s Mun Bagri.
“We figured this was a perfect opportunity.”
The action won’t be limited to the field, or just the adults, either, as there will be a bouncy castle, mini golf, and the water park.
There will also be food vendors on hand, as well as a licensed beverage area.
The plan is for the event to continue to grow.
“The key is to set ourselves up for next year, create a baseline for us to see what we need in terms of preparation (moving forward),” Bagri said.
The action kicks off both days at 10 a.m.
