Alberni athletes on provincial stage at Games

Alberni Valley Special Olympics figure skater Kimberly Giesbrecht returned home from the B.C. Winter Games in Penticton with a silver medal.

Alberni Valley Special Olympics figure skater Kimberly Giesbrecht returned home from the B.C. Winter Games in Penticton with a silver medal on Monday, while other athletes returned with success stories of their own.

Giesbrecht earned her silver medal in the Special Olympics Women Level 3.

Matthew MacDonald  earned second place in Special Olympics Men Level 2.

Badminton player Hanna Ross and the rest of the Vancouver Island Zone 6 mixed team earned bronze.

Isabella Cross competed in her first-ever BC Winter Games in three alpine skiing events at Apex Mountain Resort, outside of Penticton. Because the ski venue was out of town, skiers were up at 4 a.m. and bused to Apex every morning.

Cross finished 18th in single-run female slalom, 21st in two-run female slalom and 32nd in B.C. in the giant slalom.
