Alberni Golf: Newbies filling the links

The 'people's pro' Gerry Fagan gives the scoop on the happenings at Alberni Golf.

The Men’s Club at Alberni Golf Club would like to welcome new member Gord Bonar as well as welcome back for another season of winning Peter (Fair Weather) Mugleston.

We would also like to thank Club Captain Steve Acland and his committee for making this one of the most profitable seasons ever. That is for some members, but for others like myself and Craig Acland, maybe one day.

Now to get on to the business at hand.

We seem to have more members participating on a weekly basis than we have had in the past few years. It’s good to see some of our new members winning this season.

On Sunday under partly cloudy skies it was Mike Pichor who won the low gross, shooting a 76, while Ken Fong had the low net in the low handicap division with a 65. Al Wright took home top honours in the high handicap division with a net 67.

Closet to the pin winners were Don MacGowan on No. 2 and Cliff O’laney pocketing $30 for his Charity Closest to the pin on No. 4. No one hit the No. 13 green, but Tyler Ruel did on No. 17.

In the skins competition there was no outright winner in the low handicap division but Bob Matlock won $47.50 for his net 2 on No. 1 and another $47.50 for a net 2 on No. 12 in the high handicap division. Some guys get all the luck.

In the money pot two of our new members were able to cash in this week: Chris Owen collected $70 for the only birdie on No. 13 and Steve Evans pocketed $60 for the only birdie on No 4.

Next Sunday is the Twin Travel scramble. There will be four-man, computer picked teams. This is a chance for the members to get to know one another, by playing with someone they don’t usually play with.

The shotgun start will be at precisely 8 a.m.—please try to be there about 7:45 a.m. so you can get to your assigned holes on time. As an added feature on Sunday there will be a trip for two to Greece awarded to the person who gets first hole-in-one on No 2. Good luck to all.
