Hoops players have hit the hardwood at Port Alberni’s middle schools as their season has gotten underway.
EJ Dunn beat AW Neill last week to win the junior season opener between the friendly rivals.
Players from both teams came out tentatively at first but got into game groove as the game wore on, EJ Dunn teacher Dana Walters said.
“…the girls became more confident in their skills and working together as a team (as) the pace and the intensity of the game increased,” Walters said.
“It will be interesting to see how close these teams are by the end of the basketball season.”
The senior girls teams played their first league game at A.W. Neill last Wednesday.
The game was fast paced and physical, Walters said.
No final score was provided but A.W. Neill winning by one basket at the buzzer.
The EJ Dunn seniors continued their play at an EJ Dunn play-day with AW Neill, Nanaimo’s Wellington High School and Qualicum Beach Middle School on the weekend.
Wellington finished with two wins; EJ Dunn and QBMS finished with one will and one loss each; and AW Neill closed out the group with two losses.
It was great to see the girls out playing and having fun.
Players are finding that there is much to learn about the game when you first start playing basketball.
The goal for the season is to introduce the girls to the game, learn fundamental basketball skills, develop determination and life skills, and have lots of fun.
Teams resume play in January.
