Alberni sports briefs: what your favourite athletes got up to this week

New jobs, new players and more on the Alberni sports scene this week.

Hiller’s a Maple Leafer now

Former Alberni Valley Bulldogs’ head coach Jim Hiller has joined Mike Babcock’s coaching team with the Toronto Maple Leafs.

Hiller, 46, was born in Port Alberni and coached the Bulldogs from 2004–2006. Last year he was in charge of the NHL Detroit Red Wings’ power play and coached alongside Babcock.

“I’m excited at the opportunity of working again with Mike, and to also add to the value that both DJ (Smith) and Andrew (Brewer, both assistant coaches),” Hiller was quoted as saying by Canadian Press.

Perrier joins NO Knights

Another former Bulldog coach, Bryant Perrier, 50, was named head coach and general manager of the North Okanagan Knights of the Kootenay International Junior Hockey League (KIJHL).

Perrier’s most recent coaching assignment was three years in Europe, at the professional level in France.

Bulldogs add vet blueliner

Tyler Cooper is a big, physical stay-at-home defenceman who blocks shots, finishes his checks and is “not afraid to drop the gloves to fire up the team or get the crowd involved,” says Bulldogs’ assistant coach Adam Hayduk.

Cooper joins the Bulldogs from the Mississauga Chargers of the Ontario Junior Hockey League for future considerations.

‘Dawgs trade 20-year-olds

Everett Putz has been traded to the Calgary Mustangs and Drew Weich has gone to the Drayton Valley Thunder in the AJHL as the Dawgs free up some space with their limited 20-year-old spots.
