Alberni’s Jackie Little increases lead at Senior Women’s Open

Golfer Jackie Little scored a field low six-over-par 78 to increase her lead to five at the BC Senior Women's Open in Victoria.

First round leader Jackie Little of Port Alberni stretched her overall lead to five at the British Columbia Senior Women’s Championship being played at Highland Pacific Golf.

Little followed up her first round three-over par with a day two field low six-over par 78, 153 total (75-78-153). Little increased her lead over Victoria’s Alison Murdoch to five strokes after Murdoch struggled on day two, shooting a nine-over par 81, 158 total (77-81-158).

When speaking to her second round on the difficult par-72 5,643 yard Highland Pacific Golf Course, Little stressed its playability and fairness.

“The course was very playable today. Its conditions were great and scoring opportunities were out there but unfortunately I didn’t finish very well coming down the stretch,” stated Little.

Coming into the 266 yard par-4 16th, Little looked to be in cruise control for the round only to finish four over on her last three holes.

Finishing with a similar final three hole scorecard to Little was first round mentionable Penny Baziuk of North Saanich. Baziuk had to take an unplayable on the difficult 385 yard par-4 18th following an errant approach shot, leading to a triple-bogey seven and two round 161 total (79-82-161), good enough for 4th going into the final day.

Leapfrogging Baziuk to sit alone in 3rd place in the overall standings going into the final round was Kelowna’s Lynda Palahniuk who fired a seven-over par 79, 160 total (81-79-160). Palahniuk was able to ‘right the ship’ after sitting five-over par after only five holes on day two but managing to play final 13 holes in only two-over.

In the Super Senior division, Murdoch sits alone in first position, followed closely by Palahniuk in second and past Senior Women’s champion Holly Horwood of Vancouver (2006 & 2007) in 3rd. Horwood shot a +10 on day two for a two round 163 total (81-82-163). Murdoch holds a slim lead in the division of only two strokes.

When asked about the number she needs to fire in the final round to win the overall Championship, Murdoch did not shy away from the question.

“I might need some help from Jackie [coming backwards] but if I shoot something in the mid-70’s and plug along I will see where it puts me in the end. I have a good shot at winning but Jackie has a record of turning things around when she does something she doesn’t like and I am sure she doesn’t like her score today. “

In the Zone and Club Championships, it was an all-island sweep with Gorge Vale Golf Club taking the Club net crown compliments of excellent play by Victoria’s Carol Lett and Ruth Blasner (150-154-304). In the gross Club Championship, Cordova Bay Golf Club members Susan Ovans (Victoria) and Penny Baziuk brought home the trophy with a two-round total 334 (167-167-334).

In the Zone Championship, Zone 6’s Jackie Little and Nanaimo’s Georgina Hermans claimed the net title with a -10, 278 total (138-140-278). On the gross side, Zone 5’s Penny Baziuk and Alison Murdoch narrowly edged out Zone 6 by one stroke to finish 319 total (156-163-319).

The format for the Senior Women’s Championship is a 54-hole stroke play competition between women aged 50 and over as of the first day of competition. All players challenge for the overall title and golfers aged 60+ are classified in the Super Senior division.

During rounds one and two, the Zone and Club Team Championships were run with competitors for each team being determined prior to the start of play.

Final round action is set to tee-off at 7:30 am on Wednesday, June 20.

All spectators are welcomed and encouraged to attend.
