There was a familiar face atop the leaderboard of the Royale Cup Canadian Senior Women’s Golf Championships Tuesday afternoon at Spallumcheen Golf & Country Club.
Victoria’s Alison Murdoch, who is in search of her record fifth Canadian senior crown, held a share of the lead at 1-under in a field of 107 golfers over the age of 50.
At The Morning Star’s press time, Murdoch, who was inducted into the Canadian Golf Hall of Fame earlier this summer, was tied with Susan Podolsky of Alexandria, Va. after eight holes of play.
Vancouver’s Holly Horwood and Kelowna’s Linda Palahniuk were tied for third at par heading onto their ninth hole.
There was a foursome, including former Vernon resident Jackie Little, log-jammed in fifth place at 1-over.
Vernon’s Maureen Turner held a share of 17th at 4-over through six holes, while Brenda Samis, also of Vernon, finished her opening round at 17-over, and Coldstream’s Mary Lukacs was 19-over.
The top-70 and ties make the 36-hole cut.
Meanwhile, a trio of North Okanagan entries was a ways back of the leaders at the Titleist/FootJoy PGA of B.C. Championship, presented by AXIS Insurance, Monday at the Salmon Arm Golf Club.
Jesse Crowe, of Two Eagles Golf Course & Academy, and Keith Vandenbrink, of Hillview, sat in a six-way tie for 46th after Round 1.
Shannon Glenesk of the Vernon Golf & Country Club was 54th.
Day 2 results were unavailable before The Morning Star’s Tuesday deadline.
The field includes 75 PGA of B.C. players over 36 holes of stroke-play for a purse of $33,500.
