Katy Klomps has become the first student athlete from UBC Okanagan ever to earn CIS all-Canadian recognition.
The fourth-year middle blocker for the Heat was named one of top 14 women volleyball players in Canada for the 2014-15 season last week at the CIS awards banquet in Toronto.
It was the third CIS honour for the Heat since joining Canada West four years ago, as Emily Oxland made the all-rookie team and Steve Manuel was selected as coach of the year for the 2012-13 season.
Klomps, a nursing student, has started in all four of her years for the Heat, and has also twice been named a Canada West all-star in each of the last two years.
Along with awards on her mantle Klomps is starting to accumulate records, after four seasons in Canada West she is currently second-all time in regular season career total blocks and blocks per set with 407 total blocks and 1.35 blocks per set.
This season, Klomps’ tallied 135 total blocks that sets a new Canada West record that Katy owns with Alicia Perrin from Trinity Western, who also recorded 135 total blocks this season.
In career blocks in Canada West Katy trails just Perrin, a graduating middle from TWU, who has 512, a mark Klomps could surpass next season with more than 105 total blocks.
Heat coach Steve Manuel is extremely pleased with Klomps’ selection to the all-Canadian team. Manuel said Katy has put the work in the gym to be the player she is but also that she works extremely hard and manages her time incredibly well to play at this level and be enrolled in a challenging program such as nursing as a student athlete.
