All three Thunders headed for provincials

Midget, Atom and Bantam Thunder win double headers over the weekend to clear the way to provincials.

All three Thunder teams have qualified to make provincials last weekend.

The midget Thunder fought a close battle Saturday in the first of two games against the Cougars.

Quesnel opened up the scoring in the first five minutes of play, but the Cougars were quick to rally, tying the game up four minutes later to keep the game interesting going into the second.

Once again the Thunder were quickest, netting a go ahead goal within the first two minutes of play. But the Cougars responded hard and fast, netting three goals in the last half of the period to give them a commanding 4-2 lead. With a minute and a half left in the second, the Thunder notched another goal, putting the Cougars well within their sights.

A fourth goal for the Thunder midway through the third tied the game up all the way through to overtime.

The Thunder once again scored first, giving them the 5-4 victory in OT.

The second game, the Thunder found it easier going.

The Cougars were first out of the gate, scoring just over two minutes into the period. The Thunder responded a minute later, rounding out the period’s scoring.

In the second, the Thunder took over the game, getting one early and one late in the period putting them up two on P.G.

The Thunder weren’t satisfied with the two-goal lead, though, and continued to push, netting themselves another pair. In between the two Thunder goals, the Cougars finally managed to get their second of the night at the midpoint in the period, but it wasn’t enough as the Thunder pulled away 5-2.

Mats Phillips, Ian Jarvis and Joel Amundson were prolific on the weekend, scoring eight of the five Thunder goals over the course of the double-header.

Meanwhile, the pee wee rep Thunder faced off against 100 Mile House.

The Thunder got off to a fast start scoring three times before 100 Mile House was able to notch their first point with just over five minutes left.

The Thunder scored in the first five minutes of the second to widen the gap, but 100 Mile House returned it after around eight minutes of play. The Thunder replied in the last five minutes pushing slowly away.

In the third, a trio of goals from the Thunder, spread out across the period, met with a duo of 100 Mile goals widened the lead for the Thunder to the 8-4 win.

In the second game, the Thunder started nearly before the clock, notching a point in the first second of play. 100 Mile house put their lone goal in the sixth minute off play, but the Thunder netted another goal in both the second and third for the 3-1 win.

S. Inwood scored four of the Thunder’s points over the weekend, including a natural hat trick, separated only by the intermission.

The Bantam Thunder tore apart the Prince George Cougars in their first meeting Friday, scoring five goals without a response from Prince George in the first period.

The two teams traded goals in the second, but the lead was too much for the Cougars, as they settled back in for a third that was all Thunder, for three points to make it a 9-1 win.

Their second go-round was much closer, as Prince George scored early, within the first couple minutes, and stayed out ahead for nearly 17 minutes, until the Thunder tied it up. Neither team managed a point in the second, pushing it to a tie third. But the Thunder scored on early and one late, while keeping the Cougars from doing anything affective, leading to the 3-1 win.
