With last year’s annual skate show raising $200, Skating Club’s president Ahamida Khan was blown away to have counted donations at the end of this year’s show totalling $1,000.
“It’s unbelievable. Even grandparents stayed to help out,” she said, of the Friday, March 11 skating showcase. “I really want to thank the community for supporting us… Everyone really worked together.”
The show marks 40 years for both the Cowichan Lake Sports Arena and the Skating Club.
Throughout the well-attended event, youngsters in the Can Skate program skated to a few songs, dressed to the nines in cowboy and Egyptian costumes. Older junior figure skaters skated solos, as well as a conga skate, and as zombies for Michael Jackson’s Thriller.
The Duncanettes Synchro Team from Duncan also showed up to perform a synchronized skate.
