The annual Glen Meadows Masters Bonspiel will take place Feb. 7 to 10 and will see 32 teams or 128 curlers compete from across southern Vancouver Island.
This includes teams from Duncan, Victoria, Esquimalt and Juan de Fuca. Of those 32 teams, 14 of them are from Glen Meadows, competing in the Masters League.
The Masters bonspiel is for those aged 55-plus, the oldest this year being an 86-year-old curler.
Last year’s ‘A’ event winner was Glen Meadows’ own, Lawrence Woytowich.
“We have some good curlers here that’s for sure,” said Barry Hodgkin, president of the bonspiel.
“We have a competitive league, which has raised the level of curling in the Glen Meadows area amongst our Masters.”
Curlers at Glen Meadows are mostly from the Peninsula and Hodgkin said the club has a good reputation.
“We’re definitely up in the mix that’s for sure,” he said.
One of the curlers competing is Doug MacFarlane. This will be his 13th year competing. He is also chairman of the bonspiel committee.
“Many of our people have already been in bonspiels in Victoria, Esquilmalt and Juan de Fuca” said MacFarlane.
The groups practice Tuesday and Friday, with some playing in the Glen Meadows Masters Competitive League, which, Hodgkin said has increased their level of curling expertise.
Finals of the A, B, C and D divisions will be held on the last day of the bonspiel (Feb. 10).
The competition, taking place at Glen Meadows is open to the public to watch.
