Annual road hockey tourney a success

The Second Annual Serious Coffee Road Hockey tournament saw about a dozen kids participate

Different members of the community came out to support the Second Annual Serious Coffee Road Hockey tournament on June 10 in the TD Bank parking lot from 8-10-30 a.m.

Kids were divided into two groups, ranging from ages 10 and under and 11 and up.

About a dozen kids showed up and proud parents sat on the sidelines as the children rallied against one another, shifting a tennis ball from net to net.

The event started up a year ago, after Gord Doucette, owner of Serious Coffee, felt there was a need to hold an outdoor hockey tournament for kids.

“ I just thought it’d be a great thing for Sooke,” Doucette said.

“Hockey, Canada and kids go together,” he laughed.

Playing alongside the kids and lending professional hockey expertise were Mike Barry, Mariner’s Village developer and former NHL player, and his nephew Tyson Barrie, defenceman for the NHL Colorado Avalanche.

Mike said it was a great community event, as many hockey players grew up playing on the pavement.

“It’s great to see how many kids showed up,” he said.

The Sooke Lions were present, serving up pancakes to attendees and players.

All the procceeds were donated to the TD Bank Make a Wish Foundation.

The parking lot, or outdoor arena, was supplied by TD Bank.
