Anticipation rising for Totem 62

In January, 16 senior basketball teams will take to the courts to play for top spot.

Excitement is rising for the 62nd annual Totem Basketball Tournament at Alberni District Secondary School.

Since 1955 the tournament has brought senior boys’ and girls’ basketball teams to the Valley for the biggest high school tournament in the province.

From Jan.5-7, 16—eight boys and eight girls—senior basketball teams will take to the courts of the ADSS and Alberni Athletic Hall gyms to play for top spot.

“Totem is far from a school event now, it’s a community event,” said athletic director Mike Roberts.

The Armada boys’ team kick off the tournament on Thursday, Jan. 5 against Ballenas at 5:15 p.m. The Armada girls play next at 7 p.m. against Kwalikum.

Games run throughout the day on Friday, with the first game at 10:15 a.m. and the final game beginning at 7 p.m. Games on Saturday begin at 9 a.m. with the final at 5:45 p.m.

Ticket prices:

Thursday: Children under five are free.

-Aged five to 11 are $10 for a tourny pass.

-Aged 12 and up are $15 for a tourny pass.

Friday: children under five are free.

-Aged five to 11 are $5 for the day or $10 for tourny pass.

– Aged 12 and up are $8 per day or $15 for tourny pass.

Saturday: children under five are free.

-Aged five to 11- $5.

-Aged 12 and up- $8.
