The Castlegar Aquanauts swim club attended their first meet of the season this past weekend in Nelson. The club had 37 swimmers compete, of which 36 recorded personal best times.
“It’s always a very exciting meet as we haven’t had a competition since last August and we’re five weeks into the season,” said Aquanauts head coach Mitchell Bourne. “Many of the swimmers have moved up an age group (division) from last season and have different competition to swim against.”
Bryce Anderson set a new meet record in the 50 metre Breaststroke with a time of 48.9 seconds, nearly two seconds faster than the previous record.
The Division one boys set a new meet record as well on their way to gold in the 4X50M Freestyle Relay. The team, consisting of Carson Ogloff, Bryce Anderson, Ethan Lawczynski, and Lynden Hanvold, set the record with a time of 4:13:1, five seconds faster than the old record.
In all, the ‘Nauts picked up seven medals: One gold – Cyan Ross-Van Mierlo; four silver – Lynden Hanvold, Tenysha Ross-Van Mierlo, Genevieve Jin, and Mitchell Bourne; and two bronze – Reid Bellamy and Sierra Bellamy.
The squad finished third in the team competition with 349 total points. The Trail Stingrays finished first with 816 points, while Revelstoke Aquaducks came second with 675.
