Athletes ready for BC Summer Games

Salmon Arm and the surrounding area are sending a large contingent to this year’s BC Summer Games.

Salmon Arm and the surrounding area are sending a large contingent to this year’s BC Summer Games.

Fifteen young local athletes are competing in a variety of sports at the annual Games.

Stephen Moore, Alton Neid and Jacob Taylor will be competing in athletics. Cole Nisse and Logan Reynolds will be playing on the Thompson-Okanagan baseball team.

Leyton Boyd, Bradley Martin, Brendan Mayes, Cole Menzies and Jaxon Neid, all of whom are members of the Salmon Arm Synergy basketball club were selected for the    three-on-three basketball team.

Nicholas Lowrens and Ethan Pyle will be rowing in the games.

Julia Brown will be competing in the triathlon.

Elijia Lazar, who won a provincial gold medal in wrestling this season, and Rohan Kafle, who won bronze, will be wrestling for the BC Summer Games title.

“It’s almost like a mini-olympics they do a great job with the opening ceremonies and the closing ceremonies. It’s a really cool event,” said Rob Neid.

Neid is no stranger to the games, he acted as an assistant coach for the three-on-three basketball team when his own son Alton was on the team in 2014, the team won a silver medal.

Neid will be returning to coach his younger son Jaxon  on the three-on-three basketball team this year, while Alton has moved on to track-and field.

Alton will be competing in the 300 meter and the triple-jump, and lacking a track and field club in Salmon Arm, he said he has been training for the events in the park across from his house.
