Nanaimo athletes were fleet of foot at a track and field meet down the highway last weekend.
The Nanaimo Track and Field Club sent a sizeable contingent to the Garriock meet in Duncan on Saturday and Sunday, and the locals had 86 first-place finishes, 42 seconds and 43 thirds to take first place in the team competition.
Haley Martin was a big winner in her 11-year-old division, taking first place in the 100-metre dash and 200m as well as the 60m dash and 60m hurdles.
Ava Martiniuk won the high jump and long jump as well as the 60m hurdles in the 10-year-old division and Bailey Rossnagel, competing in the 13-year-old category, won the 800m, shot put, discus and javelin. Some other girls with standout performances included Olivia Lundman, Avery Henderson, Emma Kirk and Madison Paugh.
Among the boys, Nate Paris had tremendous results in the 13-year-old division, winning the 100m dash, 200m, 80m hurdles, 200m hurdles, high jump and long jump. Krescyn Moonsamy won the 100m dash and the 200m in his 12-year-old division. Some other boys with highlight victories included Jayden Watson, Sacha Therrien, Kynan Shurniak, Ethan Katzberg and Ben Toth.
