The Williams Lake Atom Avalanche buried the competition during the weekend in Abbotsford for gold.

The Williams Lake Atom Avalanche buried the competition during the weekend in Abbotsford at the Lorne Rowan Memorial all-girls tournament.

The Avalanche snowballed to a perfect 5-0 record at the event, held across three separate venues in the city and hosted by the Abbotsford Ice.

The Avalanche were led by coaches Lindsey Wood, Jay Cheek and Gerald Overton.

Wood noted it was a great opportunity for his players to participate in the tournament.

“Here in Williams Lake we’re working to promote female hockey, so the Abbotsford tournament was a good fit,” Wood said as players in four age groups — atom, peewee, bantam and midget — all took part.

“It was quite fitting we joined as it sounds like he [Lorne Rowan] was a big supporter of female hockey there in Abbotsford.”

Wood added the team had a great time and is thankful to the organizers of the inaugural tournament, celebrating girls hockey.

“It was a good development weekend for us,” he said. “We’ve got our home atom tournament coming up on the Family Day weekend playing against mixed teams and then one more female tourney in Prince George in March, and that’ll finish our season.”
