Awards to recognize sport excellence

Engage Sport North invites nominations for outstanding athletic achievement and extraordinary contribution to sport.

Engage Sport North is inviting lakecity residents to nominate a Rising Star for outstanding athletic achievement and extraordinary contribution to sport.

On Feb. 9 the 2017 Fan the Flame Awards Banquet and Gala will celebrate both exceptional athletic achievement and contribution to sport in the north for the 2016 year.

“Northern B.C. is home to remarkable talent and dedication,” said Allan Bristowe, chair for the event.

“It is important to celebrate our local athletes, coaches, officials and volunteers in a meaningful way and we are asking our northern communities to ensure that deserving individuals or teams are nominated.”

As many as four Rising Star awards and four Sport Difference Maker awards will be presented at the awards banquet in Prince George, which will feature a keynote address by CBC Olympic host and sports broadcaster Scott Russell.

The 2017 Fan the Flame event will recognize the accomplishments of one junior female athlete (U18), one junior male athlete (U18), one senior female athlete (18 plus) and one senior male athlete (18 plus).

Award recipients will exemplify the characteristics of fair play, good sportsmanship and dedication to sport in Northern B.C.

The Rising Star award criteria is as follows:

• Resident of Northern B.C.

• Compete in an organized sports at the regional, provincial, national or international level

• Junior Athlete: U18 on Jan. 1, 2016

• Senior Athlete: 18 plus on Jan. 1, 2016

• Consideration will be given to depth of field, level of achievement, improvement over 2015 and quality of the nomination package.

The Sport Difference Maker award criteria is as follows:

• Resident of Northern B.C.

• Coach, sport official, sport volunteer or sport administrator in Northern B.C.

• Enrich the lives of athletes and/or participants in Northern B.C. through a significant contribution to the lives of an athlete, sport organization, community program or sporting event within Northern B.C.

• Consideration will be given to geography, gender equality and quality of nomination package

Award nominations close at noon on Monday, Nov. 14.
