Athletes ascended the podium steps for their achievements at the B.C. 55-Plus Games.

The multi-sport event, formerly the B.C. Seniors Games, was held Sept. 12-16 in and around Vernon.

Participants from Nanaimo, Nanoose Bay, Lantzville and Gabriola Island made an impact, helping the North Island zone team to a fifth-place finish in the overall standings with 273 medals.

Close to 3,600 participants took part in 28 sporting events at facilities throughout the north Okanagan region. They were also treated to opening and closing ceremonies, an afternoon social and a nighttime dance.

“We were very pleased with everything,” said Wee Yee, president of the 2017 Games committee, speaking to Black Press. “The biggest thing was the feedback from the participants. They were all very co-operative and were saying things like ‘these were the best Games ever.’ They all had fun.”
