Alex Fraser Park will host over 100 contestants from across the province this Saturday

Quesnel has produced its share of incredible rodeo personalities over the years.

Young stars like Lane Cork and Matt O’Flynn have proven their mettle across provincial lines, and new personalities like Issac Janzen are beginning to make their mark too.

To get a glimpse at the next generation, fans of western sports can check out this weekend’s (Sept.28-30) High School Rodeo.

Held at Alex Fraser Park, the event will see competitors from both North and South divisions of B.C. High School Rodeo Association (BCHRA) take part.

Anywhere between 100 and 150 contests are expected to give their best, says local High School Rodeo committee member Paddy Storey.

“People will be coming from Keremeos in the south to Dawson Creek in the north,” she says.

“It’s a great opportunity for kids to get into the rodeo industry and learn more about the events and meet people from across the province.”

Quesnel has held BCHRA events in the past but missed last year due to the wildfires.

They are planning on making up for the missed year with a bevvy of fun events like cutting horse competitions, chute dogging, steer wrestling, pole bending and roping events.

For those who like to see their competitors get tossed, there will be saddle bronc, bareback and bull riding events too.

There will be no charge for spectators who come down, and there will be a concession stand as well as s silent auction.
