Freeride World Tour competitor Logan Pehota was all smiles after a nearly flawless run in the men’s ski category on Monday afternoon.
It was so flawless it earned him 98 points, which commentators and athletes thought was a rare call from the judges.
The Canadian from Pemberton calls Whistler-Blackomb his home mountain, but he has been acquainted with Kicking Horse Mountain Resort before.
In 2011, Pehota competed in the Wrangle The Chute competition, which is held each year. At 16 years old, he tackled some of Golden’s toughest chutes.
Now, at 22, he’s wrangling even larger competitions.
Pehota arrived in Golden with high hopes of performing well at the Freeride World Tour, and his hard work paid off, claiming him the gold.
“This is definitely planned out a few days before, so when we go to ski the runs, we know what we’re doing 100%,” Pehota explained about the work that goes into the competition. “We might have a back up line in case something doesn’t go the way you want it to go on the way down. But for the most part, you pick your line a day or two before and you stick to it.”
After the day of competitions, skiers and snowboarders were back at it on Tuesday morning for the rescheduling of the Japan event, which had been canceled.
“I’m happy with how today went, and I’m okay if I don’t do amazing again tomorrow,” he said.
Skiers and snowboarders put up some tough competition for the Japan competition that was hosted on Terminator Peak on Tuesday morning, and Pehota managed another amazing ride, placing fourth.
