Thank goodness spring is finally just around the corner. One indicator of the upcoming change of season is that registration is now underway for those wishing to play in local fastball, softball, or baseball leagues…

Returning for a second year as president of the Nanaimo Minor Baseball Association is Mike Holyk, with Glenn Buckle the first vice-president, second vice-president Jereme MacKinnon and treasurer Darsh Bligh.

There are divisions for players in minor baseball from t-ball for youngsters born 2011-12, up to midget division involving the age group born 1999-2001. Registration ranges from $95-195 depending on age. House league teams are now being formed, as well as rep teams at various age levels. A pair of in-person sign-up sessions have already been held and any further registrations must be done online at www.nmba.teampages.com. Registrations must be received by March 15 in order to avoid late charges.

Registation for Nanaimo and District Minor Fastball Association softball for boys and girls ages 5-19 is also underway and there have been no changes in fees which range from $105 for U6-U8 to $145 for U12-19. Late fees are in effect. Registration can be done online at www.nanaimofastball.org. League play will begin in mid-April. In addition to house softball teams, U14 and U16 Diamonds fastpitch rep teams will also take to the field.

Brian Cornborough is back as president of the association this year. Jim Nichol is vice-president, Kelly Poystila the secretary and Wendy Knock the association secretary.

Several player clinics will be held later this month and NDMFA is also set to hold Level 1 and Level 2 umpiring clinics. Umpires are always needed, so if you’re interested, contact UIC@nanaimofastball.org.

Meanwhile, registration is also happening for the Nanaimo Breakers Fastball Association, which provides an opportunity for boys and girls ages 5-19 to learn the skills of the game of fastball. Kevin Robillard is president of the Breakers organization, assisted by vice-president Keith Rodway, treasurer Sandi Bassett and other directors.

A learn-to-play program is offered to introduce the sport for those born 2001-12 and 2009-10 at a cost of $80. Registration fees are $100 for U10 mites up to $120 for U19 midgets. A $50 jersey deposit is also required for U10 and up. The season for house and rep teams will start in early April, with games played at Pioneer Park, Harry Wipper Field and Pleasant Valley Field. In-person registrations will be held March 9 and March 14, from 5-8pm at the Oliver Woods Community Centre. Online registration is also open now at www.nanaimobreakers.com.

Warmer weather is coming and so is the local ball season, so it’s time to get signed up.

Whatever your sport, a reminder in closing to play your hardest, play fair, and show good sportsmanship.
