After his win against Paul Bzdel, it was only a matter of time before Aubrey “Bam Bam” Morrow was up for a shot at the Canadian Middleweight Championship. The time has come, as “Bam Bam” is slated to fight Oct. 3 in Quebec.
The last time Morrow was in the ring, he fought for the Western Canadian Middleweight title at the “Rumble at the Rink” in Nanaimo, May 23. He dispatched a very tough Bzdel on his way to a seventh round TKO, putting him in line for a shot at national champ Francis Lafreniere.
“We’ve been in talks since March about this fight,” coach Rich LeStage said. “They liked the last fight Aubrey had and it was just a matter of finding the right show. There’s one in September so they didn’t want to be too close to that one. We got the call last week just to make sure we’d be available so they could start planning the show.”
“Bam Bam” will now have two months to train for his biggest fight. Morrow has been impressive since his return to the ring a little over two years ago. He’s gone unbeaten in his last three fights and has finished his opponents in each of the three fights.
“We’re looking forward to this,” LeStage said. “We’ll spend the rest of July starting on Aubrey’s conditioning work. August will be looking to get in a lot of sparring and then September will mainly be training specifically to what we feel should be the right style to beat Francis.”
Gloved Up Promotions’ Terry Strawson has watched Morrow climb the ranks since before becoming a promoter. As a friend and fan, Strawson is very pleased to hear the news.
“It’s a great opportunity for Aubrey,” Strawson said. “I’ve been fortunate enough to be around him from early on in his career, even being in his corner for a few of his fights. Aubrey’s got a great chance at winning this bout and I hope that’s what happens for him.”
It’s not going to be easy though, as Morrow was well tested by Bzdel. LeStage knows what his fighter is capable of.
“It was a tough fight,” LeStage said. “Paul was a tough opponent, he’s been that way for everyone that he’s faced. Going into that last fight, we wanted to send a message by being able to stop Paul (which) even Francis wasn’t able to do. So for Aubrey, he went through that battle and came out after doing something the Canadian Middleweight champion couldn’t even do. That speaks volumes of the type of competitor and fighter Aubrey continues to become.”
