The Barsby Bulldogs took a great big bite out of the regular season, one that other teams are sure to notice.
John Barsby Community Secondary School’s AA varsity football team blasted the Carson Graham Eagles 64-14 on Friday in North Vancouver. The ‘Dawgs were dominant on both sides of the ball, and built up a 44-14 halftime lead before the third and fourth quarters were played run-time.
“It was pretty complete in a lot of areas,” said Rob Stevenson, Barsby coach. “We were uptempo when we had the ball in our hands. Defensively we came out perhaps a little too jacked up and we had a couple breakdowns in pursuit.”
Both times the Eagles scored, the Bulldogs had an immediate answer. The home team got the scoring started, but Jacob Odynsky returned the ensuing kickoff past midfield and finished the drive himself with a two-yard TD run. A two-point conversion gave Barsby a lead it never relinquished.
“We were running the ball on them really well and they couldn’t stop us on offence,” said James Robinson, Barsby lineman. “Defensively … we just kept pounding on them and they started to break down and after a while we really slowed them down and then we were stopping them pretty consistently.”
Brandon Parker had three touchdowns, two on the ground and then one on a 37-yard TD toss from Brody Taylor. Odynsky finished with two rushing majors and Justin Cook and Frankie Shaw also scored TDs on run plays, as did Dexter Shea who scored on a 31-yard run. Barsby’s other touchdown came on a 62-yard pass play from Austin Lyle to Duc Truong.
Shea, Kyle Vollet and Shota Higuchi had interceptions and David Work had a forced fumble.
The Bulldogs liked the fact that so many different players made contributions in the win.
“You’ve got to defend every gap from sideline to sideline against us, and at the same time, we can go vertical,” said Stevenson.
GAME ON … Next action for the Bulldogs is Friday (Sept. 28) in North Vancouver against the always-tough Windsor Dukes.
