Baseball heats up diamonds as teams eye provincials

There’s lots on the baseball calendar in the coming weeks.

While the Victoria Mariners travel to the Okanagan for a four-game weekend against the Okanagan Athletics, the No. 2 Victoria Eagles Premier baseball squad is set to host the No. 1 Langley Blaze this weekend.

The Blaze will arrive at Lambrick Park in time for a 12 p.m. start for the double-header on July 18.

The Eagles and Mariners wrap up their season July 21 with a 6 p.m. game at Henderson Park.

The Eagles are eying the BCPBL provincials championships, when they host the best of the Premier Baseball League July 30 to Aug. 3 at Royal Athletic Park on Caledonia Avenue. Anthony Pluta’s senior Eagles will be looking to repeat their 2013 championship title.

At the Junior Premier level, the Mariners play host to the Nanaimo Pirates Saturday, July 18, with the first pitches going at noon and 2:30 p.m. at Henderson Park.

Carnarvon ballpark hosts the province July 23 to 26 for the provincial Pee Wee AAA baseball championships. The province’s top 10 pee wee teams will to move on to represent B.C. in  California or Washington State.

On the Little League field, Beacon Hill Softball hosts the 2015 Softball National Championship Tournament for major and junior at Hollywood Park July 25 to 29. The five day tournament will feature teams from all over the country vying to move on to represent Canada at the Little League Softball World Series in August.

The Victoria HarbourCats are also at home this weekend for a three-game stand against the Bellingham Bells. Head to the park for a 6:35 p.m. start tonight (Friday, July 17) and a 1:05 pm. start Saturday.

The Greater Victoria in the Victoria and District Cricket Association hists the pitch for two games Sunday, Aug. 19. The Incogs will be hosted by Albion at St. Michaels University School, while Oak Bay takes on the United at Beacon Hill Park.

Always wanted to try your hand at field hockey? Sailors Field Hockey Club hosts drop-in sessions for anyone, 14 years of age or older. The cost is $5 per session for 90 minutes of skills and drills on the UVic turf field on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 7 to 8:30 p.m. For information, email leeronnie19@gmail.com

Victoria Fastball Club is hosting the U14A Nationals from August 5 to 9.  The Devils 2001 and 2002 teams will be taking part, as will the best teams in this age group from across Canada. All the games between the 20 different teams will take part at View Royal and Hyacinth Park.
